The Evening That Almost Wasn't

Though I can’t remember ever having the conversation, my husband was quite insistent that I had agreed to go to a Michael W. Smith concert in Dallas a couple of nights ago. Not only was it pricey, on a school night, and a lengthy drive, I really hadn’t been to a Christian Concert since about 1983 and wasn’t even a little bit enthusiastic about it . . . so much so that we almost gave our tickets away at the last minute to anyone who would take them. When it came right down to it though, we finally decided to ditch our kids (we had to hire 3 different babysitters to make it work and hire another girl to take Ashley to her dance lessons) and go with our good friends Heath and Alisa to the concert.

Wow! Was I in for a surprise. I LOVED this concert! It was set in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center which was decorated incredibly beautiful for Christmas. Our seats were right above the stage where we had a bird’s eye view of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra—whose magnificent sounds could possibly compete with the ensembles of heaven. Getting to hear The Katinas and Melinda Doolittle (American Idol finalist) was an added bonus. The atmosphere and music were simple majestic. Such a nice way to celebrate the Christmas season. My only regret is that I didn’t take my two older kids—I think it would have been great inspiration for their own musical pursuits.

We topped off the evening by eating at The Cheesecake Factory and I even got a chance to run into my favorite store next door: The Container Store. What a great night! What a great husband to be so thoughtful! Honestly, I would have paid double for such a wonderful evening.

It sounds wonderful! I love Michael W...I would have taken those tickets off your hands. My hubby just downloaded that album to my ipod...not as nice as a majestic concert but I will take what I can get. :-)

Based on your comment on my post I realized Tori and Cole have the same birthday this month. I think that is 2 of our kids that have the same b-day...isn't another one born on June 23? That is Sky's b-day. Things that make you go hmmm.

So glad it all worked out, it sounds like a wonderful evening. It's always so hard to get away without the kids, but worth the extra effort for a fun night out. :)

I am always like that...I feel like it's too stressful and too much work, but afterwards, I'm always glad I went!

Maybe we'll have to see if it is coming to our area!

it's so nice to be unexpectedly surprised. was he a gentleman and not rub in what a baby you'd been about it? mine would have wanted to really badly:0)

i can't tell you how many times he takes me somewhere and i'm kicking and screaming in my own stubborn way and it ends up being fabulous.

so glad you enjoyed a grown up night out!

Wow, if you aren't enjoying those concerts I think you are attending the wrong ones! Anyhoo, we saw MWS once and it was fantastic. It, too, was a Christmas concert.

Did you say Cheesecake Factory in Dallas? Yippy, we are coming down for Christmas. Can't wait!

How fun! We never get to do anything like that around here! I want to try the Cheesecake factory sometime. Hey, my b-day is on the 30th, could you mail me a piece?! ;)

Hi Beth, I got to see MWS in concert this year in Wabash, IN at the Honeywell Center. it was not a large venue and though we were many rows back from the stage; we were dead center. There looked to not be a bad seat in the house. I decided that I would never go to another large MWS concert (we've been to a few) again, though his Christmas concerts are usually spectacular. I'm glad that you enjoyed your evening. If you ever need a sitter; call Meredith. Since she is an HA grad/alumni she could probably get some good references, ha ha! and since she has no family for 100's of miles, she probably has lots of free time! If you see her, hug her for me since I don't get to see her beautiful face for Christmas this year. Message me if you would like her contact information.

Beth, this has happened to me sooo many times. I am the girl on the couch with a book. That is totally my idea of a great evening. Dustan always drags me to things and I end up loving them. Don't you love to be surprised by a good night like that? I love it when everything flows - good restaurant, good show, fun times.

I've never even heard of The Container Store!

So jealous : ) I love all of MWS's Christmas CDs and I'm a Melinda Doolittle fan and I really really miss the Container Store. Really really! Tulsa just got a Cheesecake Factory though, so at least that's something. Miss you guys!
