Do You Have A Need For Sparkle and Bling?

Marilyn Monroe once sang that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. I’d have to say I disagree.

Though I didn’t ask for them, and though I’ve never been a diamond-wearing kind of girl, David bought me diamond earrings last December for our 13th wedding anniversary. Though I wear them, some days I hugely regret that such a thoughtful gift ever crossed my dear husband’s mind . . . like the day I dropped one on my bathroom floor. I couldn’t find it. After crawling all over the floor and underneath the vanity, I noticed a very small, hairline crevice between the vanity and the ceramic tile. After I removed six ceramic tiles, I found my little diamond earring. That was about 8 months ago . . . and those tiles have yet to be replaced.

And then there was yesterday. I dropped one in my bathroom sink. After falling down the drain I mentally debated as to weather I should remove the trap under my sink and retrieve it . . . or just let it go. I actually gave it a shot, but the pipes were too tight for me to turn. I didn’t use that sink the rest of the day and then David recovered my small diamond earring when he got home from work.

Or how about when you can’t find your diamond earrings. After a thorough search you find them in the trunk of your young son’s play car. Nice!

I guess I don’t get it. I’m totally fine with $20 earrings—just nice enough to not make my ears sore. Then, when something unfortunate happens, it’s not a big deal. I can handle losing $20 bucks. Am I alone here? I have a feeling I am.

i get grand ideas about how thoughtful it would be to receive an expensive gift of jewelry...then i start thinking the same things as you.

the moral of the story...is that a man needs to make us feel as though we are worthy of diamonds and buy us cubic zirconia:0)

I totally agree with you Beth! Expensive jewelry terrifies me....especially with small kids in the house. Someday I hope to be able to sport diamond earrings without the stress, but my life seems a little too hectic right now.
What a thoughtful gift from that great husband of yours though! :)

Kevin is very thankful that I am not a jewelry person... It's just not practical to me. I would rather he listen to me when I talk and find something else that would mean more. Altough that CZ idea is very good...and one of the things i really want right now is a Mother's necklace with all the kids' birthstones.

I use Gain...that's the only thing I can think of as to how the clothes smell...I love Gain. It's on my favorites list...

Not alone entirely. I'm not a diamond person mostly because of the Africa mining situations however I do like jewelry. I just don't know how to pick it out. If I could shop off of what other people wear, I'd do much better. Glad you've kept up with your earrings so far though.. way to go! I dropped my wedding ring in the toilet once. Thankfully, it was a clean toilet.

You are a woman after my own heart.

I wear diamond earrings almost everyday...from my mom. I have bought a pair for my girls as well. I cringe everytime I see Alicia's on the counter instead of put away or in her ears.

I love the thoughtfulness of the gift, but I see many women who are so busy checking out one anothers jewels instead of the heart.

I have to amen this one too. I just don't get jewerly. I have a few nice pieces...diamond earrings that I never take out for the same fear..down the drain.

(I even tried to convince my husband to buy me a CZ engagement ring, but he absolutely refused...which I found interesting....)

And I told my mom (who loves jewerly) to give my sister the jewels when she dies and leave me the real estate :) ha! Good thing my mom has a good sense of humor!

I love that they were found in your son's toy car. That is priceless.

I don't have a alot of expensive jewelry, but it looks like I'm in the minority after reading all your comments. I would LOVE me some expensive diamonds :-) Bring it on!

I'm sure you're not shocked to hear this admission from me, Beth :-)

Wow, yeah I am the minority too. I actually find myself in the middle of class, sometimes work, and definitely during homework staring at my (first) diamond ring :-) I don't know if it is because I am so excited to be engaged, or if it is because I like the diamonds.

...I think it is both!

Although I have never owned a diamond piece of jewelry (in fact, my parents do not even have wedding bands, even though they are happily married to each other) I'm sure if I had a pair, I'd be conscience of them too. My most significant pieces of jewelry at the time are my silver ring for singleness and my honor ring.

Oh, and on a different note, I love Nicholas' pose in this picture!!!

I do have some expensive jewelry, but I only wear them on special occasions. I am also very paranoid about losing them, so I immediately put them away in a certain hiding place when I'm done wearing them for the day.

My hubby wants to buy me more jewelry, but I keep telling him to wait until after our son is grown and out of the house. :-D

The only expensive jewelry I own is my wedding ring. I change my mind so much on fashion that I can't see spending big bucks on a necklace that I may only wear 2 or 3 times. I would love to have diamond earrings but with little kids around, maybe not. I laughed at the earrings in the toy car. Was it an armored car?

I think he needs to buy you bigger ones so they are easier to find...hee!

Actually I am quite practical myself and my current lifestyle isn't conducive to diamonds...actually thought about pawning my wedding ring and just getting a nice band. My husband wasn't real thrilled with the thought or my lack of sediment. :-)

I'm a QVC Diamonique girl myself! My dh bought me a "wedding set" in 2001 that has a 2 ct. solitare on a band that contains 16 little round stones and it wasn't much over $100. I wear it all the time instead of my real set. I get compliments about my ring every week! A real diamond this size would cost over a half year of house payments!!! Staggering to think of it in those terms. God bless QVC!!

I am with you, Beth. I'd rather have a bagless vacuum than diamonds. I'd rather have a Kitchen Aid mixer, all new closet organizers, a pair of shoes, a leaf blower, almost anything and everything I'd rather have more than diamonds.

Your kids are so cute it hurts. I've said this a zillion times, but Nicholas looks like a baby doll with porcelain skin and rosy cheeks and squeezable as a Puffalump.

Do kids still play with those? ....

You know, I feel the same way, although at times, I'd love to get a gift like that..

Well my plan was not to comment, however; vanity has won! I NEED sparkle and bling. About 2 "Gifting seasons" ago (meaning: First comes Christmas, 11 days after that is my BDay, 1 month after that is Valentines and 1 month after that is our wedding anniversary. = Gifting Season) I told johnathon all I wanted was Jewelry I spent several months in preparation by cutting out pictures in magazines, sending him links via email hoping he would get the vision of what kind of jewelry I liked. After that to be on the safe side I went to different stores and picked out a large selection of what I liked and handed him the list...I gave him specific instructions "I like everything on this list so you can surprise me by what you buy" The result for 4 months I had lots of little boxes to open. After that I had my foundation of classic, nice, real jewelry so every year we just add one piece here and there.
I will say...having no children to eat the diamond earings, or flush the strands of pearls does help in the caring of such things! =)
The secret to affording such luxuries...Sam's Club jewelry counter...thier jewelry is real, very nice and reasonably priced!

I could get all politically self-righteous and say I dont' want diamonds ever because of how they are mined, etc, but who the HECK would I be kidding??! I ahve been offered any. But as far as diamond earrings go, - I like the cheap stuff at Target. One of the ways I have chosen to be a bit more lavish with myself, is to try and check the clearance jewelry at Target about once a month...
