An Evening At The Symphony

Over the weekend we attended an amazing symphony made up of top high school musicians from all over the region. My nephew Michael was on the trumpet and Caleb the trombone. Maybe I don’t get out much, but honestly it was one of the best performances I’ve ever been to.

All of my extended family was there and we had all four of our kids as well. When the Master of Ceremonies asked that we try to refrain from coughing because it was being recorded live, David and I immediately regretted our decision to not get a sitter for Nicholas!

When the music began Cole did exactly what you would expect Pavlov’s dog to do if he had been conditioned to go to sleep every night of his life listening to classical music. Cole was out like a light before the second song! A true blessing given our need to be very, very quiet.

Fortunately for us, Nicholas wasn’t fussy. Unfortunately for us, he picked that particular afternoon to start practicing his syllables! David had to take him out.

The symphony was a great time for all. I’m so proud of my nephews—they are blessed with boatloads of talent. (And have practiced their instruments incalculable hours). The first picture is when they were the ring bearers in our wedding 13 years ago. The other is them just after the symphony. They were so, so cute . . . and now they are so, so handsome!

It's a little scary what 13 years will do! My kids look about the age of the boys in the first picture--and I'm not ready for them to look like the second picture! :)

I'm sure it was a fun evening! It sounds lovely!

I was wondering there... thinking those little 3 year old boys were already playing in a symphony. So glad to hear about their talent--being a musician, myself.

I'm with Lisa...scary thought.

It's hard to imagine.

Wow, what a great example of kids turning out wonderful. In a world full of stories (like Karen's neighbor) of kids that have little respect for others and even less for themselves it is nice to see two young men of this caliber.

Sounds like a great time!

Are these the Smith kids? If so I've heard about the wonder of this family from Alicia. Maybe there is more talent I'm unaware of on your side of the family, too :) Can you imagine J and Cole being that grown up someday? Wow, I keep telling you not to blink, Beth. It's going to happen :)
By the way...I've missed you.

I started sweating when I thought about having my kids in a symphony and being asked not to cough.

Sounds like a fabulous time! I am impressed your little ones did so well...not sure how mine would be in a symphony but I could venture to guess.

Don't have your email to drop you note's to say "hi". I saw on MF's blog that David was gone again. It always make me sad because I know you are a busy mommy. Alicia always told me how thoughtful Dave was about leaving the office on time, etc... You are blessed, but so is he. Your life is so busy and requires much. Just thinking about you so often. I still think about the first time I walked into the Hasz house with Lee and walked around thinking, "Wow, Dave and Beth lived here and THIS is where Alicia spent all that time" :)

It's wonderful the kids did so well at the symphony.

I wish there were more symphony performances catered to little ones. I'd love for Alex to be exposed to music like that in a "live" setting, rather than only over our home stereo system, but I'm afraid he'll want to talk and visit with everyone at the concert (he's very social).

It is hard to believe those are the same 2 little boys! What a blessing that you could all be at the symphony and enjoy their hard work. I'm sure it really blessed them to have all the family there!

Beth, I'm posting here because I don't have an email address for you. The comment you wrote to Karen impressed and resonated within me. You began with, "For the FIRST time in my life I wish I lived in NY so I could join you at Starbucks . . . and I don't even like coffee!" Good for you. I have a feeling that spoke volumes to Karen. I know it did to me.

I want to communicate to you and Dave how much admiration and respect I've carried all these years for you both. I had the rare opportunity of working with Dave this past weekend in the MSP ATF. Seems he and I only work together when there's an issue with a teenager. Your husband is a brillant, compassionate and wise man. He has such insight and knows how to objectively lead others to reach their full potential. I think he and I share some similar characteristics or traits, that may scare him but he probably already knows. I was honored to be in the room watching him this past weekend. Please tell him that for me, will you?

I too have a file full of letters, cards, emails, etc., from teenagers who I've worked with through the years. They've taught me so much about life, myself and God. Thank you for reminding me of that by writing what you did on Karen's blog.

okay Beth..Feb 13th was one week ago! How do you expect a grammy to keep track of the kids when you don't blog????????

Beth I'm hoping that your absence is for a pleasant reason and not because you have sick kiddos or you yourself are feeling under the weather. Maybe you are off on a spa weekend...? If so, I envy you but wish you well!
